Map to Brackettville - If you are a fan of John Wayne, you might be interested in traveling to Bracketville to see the original movie set for the movie The Alamo.  Only 30 miles from Del Rio and the US-Mexico border, Brackettville is definitely not in the Hill Country.  Arid and flat would describe the terrain.  Start early in the morning, take a spirited run down Hwy 16 and have a hearty breakfast at the popular OST (Old Spanish Trail) Restuarant in Bandera.  Long a favorite biker hangout, the OST should not be missed.  The route to Brackettville is the quickest and not necessarily the most fun.  The route back, however, will prove more interesting.  Just how interesting?  I'm not sure.  You see, although I have been to Brackettville, I have not been on the roads from Brackettville to Camp Wood.  After leaving Brackettville on Ranch 334, instead of turning left on Ranch 3199, you can continue on 334 to Hwy 55 and then north to Camp Wood.  This would be a quicker and safer route, but 3199 (Tularosa Rd.) just looked so interesting on the map!  The Lost Maples Natural area is also on the return trip and, if you have time, a brief stop would be worthwhile.  Traffic on 39 will probably be fairly heavy late in the day, so take it easy.  For directions, Click Here.

If you want to take a leisurely ride and literally smell the flowers, the best place in the state is
Willow City Loop.  A short ride north of Fredericksburg, just watch for the sign on your right.  If you are interested in Indian lore, continue on to Enchanted Rock State Park.  For directions to both, click HERE.  If you would like to start your own wildflower garder, stop by Wildseed Farms, just east of Fredericksburg on Hwy 290.
